HBCU College Tour

HBCU College Tour

During Spring Break (March 26 through March 30, 2018) 18 Epic students embarked on a first for the school - our first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) tour. This trip would not have been possible without the generosity of philanthropist John W. Rowe, the Rebecca Kutchins Fund, our #GivingTuesday donors and the work of Epic staff (Bejeray Morrison, Victor Taylor, Dr. Keva Gaston, and Clifford Briggs) who worked tirelessly to make sure that our students had a life-changing experience.

The five-day tour took students across Ohio, the District of Columbia, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee as students visited the following institutions:

  • Alabama A & M University
  • Central State University
  • Clark Atlanta University
  • Fisk University
  • Hampton University
  • Howard University
  • Johnson C. Smith University
  • Morehouse College
  • Spellman College
  • Wilberforce University

Student reflections:

This was a once in a lifetime experience. This spring break was very useful, I got a much more vivid sense of what college life was like and what should be expected of us. This trip also changed my views on HBCU's. Two months ago I didn't expect myself to ever consider an HBCU as one of my choices. However, this trip really opened my eyes to look into these colleges. It made me realize that Latinos also go here and you get more of a one on one student to teacher experience compared to other larger colleges. Many Latinos also go to HBCU's and are very successful in their major. - Ana

I already made a conclusion about going to college in Chicago. After this tour, I could see better opportunities for me in other states. - Ismail

I am so grateful that I went on this trip. It was an experience of a lifetime that has changed my life and mentality completely. - Mercy
