“EPIC pushes you hard.  They want the best out of you because they believe students are smart and can be the top.  They believe we can do our best.  There is no 'we can’t.' They only believe in 'we can' so we can be successful.” ~ Amber, Class of 2013

Mikva Challenge
At EPIC, we created a special block of time on each for students to learn to make a difference in society. Students choose a year-long project team that will meet 40 minutes each day. These small groups of 20 students research, develop, and act on opportunities for change, while building leadership skills. Our high-level, service-learning projects will extend beyond the classroom allowing students to gain experience and confidence as they realize the great affect youth can have on society. All project courses will be developed using Mikva Challenge’s, “Issues to Action” curriculum. A few examples from our current classes are:

  • Community Health – students will work to improve lunch quality and nutritional value for this year and next. They will also plan a healthy food fair for the community, sort of a “Taste of South Chicago.”
  • Domestic Violence – students will work on preventing teen dating violence through a play and community workshops.
  • College Culture – students will improve the college culture at EPIC by decorating classrooms with high expectations, and planning college trips.
  • Environment – students will develop a school re-cycling program and plan other items that will help improve the school.
  • Student Leadership Council – students will work on leadership items with a different administrator each day to develop school tours, engage the public at speaking events, solve school problems, and works to raise funds for school programs.
